FarmFuture helps farmers select the best crops by predicting a Suitability Score using climate and soil data, boosting yields and promoting sustainable agriculture!
Inspiration
FarmFuture was inspired by the pressing need to support farmers in making data-driven decisions about crop selection. With the challenges posed by climate change and varying soil conditions, we aimed to create a tool that leverages real-time data to help farmers optimize their yields and promote sustainable practices.
What it does
FarmFuture predicts the best crops for specific lands by calculating a Suitability Score based on daily climate data, altitude, and soil properties. By providing tailored recommendations, it helps farmers maximize their productivity and make informed choices about crop planting.
How we built it
We built FarmFuture using various APIs to gather essential data:
- NASA's POWER API: Fetches daily climate data to understand weather patterns.
- Open Elevation API: Retrieves altitude data, which is crucial for assessing land characteristics.
- SoilGrids API: Queries soil properties to evaluate the suitability of different crops.
The data from these APIs is processed to calculate suitability scores for various crops, and we developed a web interface for users to input their land details and view results.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have successfully integrated multiple APIs to create a cohesive tool that delivers reliable crop recommendations. The user-friendly web interface has received positive feedback from early users, and we are excited about the potential impact FarmFuture can have on farming practices.
What we learned
Throughout the development process, we learned the importance of API management and data integration. We also gained insights into the agricultural domain, particularly how different environmental factors influence crop growth. Collaborating as a team was essential in overcoming technical challenges and refining our approach.
